Ward, Brinson team up for duathlon win
Wes Coyner Duathlon

JUNEAU EMPIRE

Cyclist Terry Ward and runner Miles Brinson teamed up to take first place overall at last Saturday's Wes Coyner Duathlon.

The second annual 2-mile run/9-mile bike/2-mile run event started and ended at the False Outer Point parking lot along North Douglas Highway. The race is held in memory of Coyner, a local duathlete who died during a race in California in July 2002.

Participants in Saturday's race - held jointly by the Southeast Road Runners and Juneau Freewheelers - were allowed to compete as individuals or in two- or three-person teams.

Dave Ringle was the first individual finisher, taking seventh place overall in 56:38. Michelle Schindler was the first female individual finisher, coming in ninth overall in 57:01.

Photos of Saturday's race canbe found on the Internet at www.coyner.net/gallery/duathlon.

The Juneau Freewheelers will hold a team time trial along North Douglas Highway this evening, while the Southeast Road Runners' next race is the 14-mile Windfall Lake Trail Challenge on Saturday. For more information on those events, see Sports in Juneau on Page B2.
